Mercy was exhausted but perversely, as soon as she extinguished her lamp and closed her eyes, sleep deserted her. Tonight had been momentous in almost every possible way. Once the elation had worn off, would she regret what she had done? She was too vastly relieved to believe that possible. She had been a very successful player on that stage for a very long time, however. She understood only too well how it worked, and how it could be manipulated. If she repented, if she retreated, she would eventually be able to return. Yeah right!, as Jack would say. And as for the Armstrongs? She wasn’t going to give them another thought. None of them understood her, or cared to hear her side of the tragic story of her marriage. Their childlessness had been a tragedy for both herself and Harry, but it was history now.

The day she’d met Jack, she remembered telling him—rather pompously, thanks in part to the brandy—Tomorrow is the first day of the rest of my life. She hadn’t known then that she’d still have to sweep up the debris of her previous life, but tonight that was precisely what she had done. And, at the end of it, she had taken another momentous step of a very different kind.

The fire in the bedroom had burned itself out and it was cold enough for her to see her breath. Mercy snuggled further under the covers. She was beginning to understand what was meant by love-making. Tonight’s experience made her see that there was a great deal more to it than she had ever imagined. After she had—what? There must be a word for it, but she had no idea what it might be. Afterwards, though, when she had curled up tightly against Jack and felt his... He had been so hard but, instead of bracing herself for the intrusion, she had wanted him inside her.

Even alone, in the privacy of her bedchamber, this thought made her cheeks flush. And it awoke what she knew to be desire. What Jack had done to her made her want him. She wanted him now. She wanted to touch him the way he had touched her, and to kiss him as he had kissed her—not only on the mouth but to taste his skin, to see him. Naked. To feel him pressed against her. Inside her. Mercy shuddered, closing her eyes under the covers, and let her imagination run free.
